Artist Statement: This is a geometric vessel. There are floral designs on the hexagons that make up the perimeter. They are all unique, with 3 different designs and one side is similar to its opposite. I focused on form as the element of design for this vessel. It was created from the inspiration of Katsushika Hokusai, and her work; Bullfinch And Weeping Cherry Blossoms. She created this piece of art in 1834. I didn't plan on doing an organic form of vessel, but I wanted to somehow use my inspiration from Hokusai's art. I decided to carve in drawings of flowers into my geometric vessel. I intended on making subtle versions of Hokusai's painting and carving them into the hexagons. The drawings ended up being very different from Hokusai's, but the intentions of the drawings were still behind them. I like how this vessel ended. It ended up being only 4 sides with hexagon's. The base is a square, but I was able to get it to stay up better. I like the four sides better anyways, and it worked out better because of the amount of sketches I would have to make if it were 6 sides.
